Greenville Independent School District (GISD) reiterates its unwavering commitment to the safety and security of its students and staff. Over the years, GISD has implemented a comprehensive range of measures to create a secure learning environment for everyone involved.
One of the key initiatives undertaken by the district was the establishment of the GISD Police Department in 2016. This dedicated force ensures the safety of the schools within the district.
Enhanced access control measures have been put in place in every GISD building. Keyless entry systems provide advanced control over access, reinforcing the security protocols. Additionally, state-of-the-art security technologies, including Aiphones and controlled entry security vestibules, are utilized along with a meticulous visitor sign-in/sign-out process to monitor and manage visitors effectively.
The implementation of Raptor Alert Systems on every campus ensures controlled access to the school buildings. Licensed police officers are stationed at each campus, ensuring a swift response to any security concerns that may arise. Extensive surveillance is maintained across the district through approximately 700 security cameras, both inside and outside the facilities, with vigilant monitoring by dedicated security personnel.
GISD conducts regular safety and security audits across all its facilities, identifying and addressing potential vulnerabilities. Emergency radios, district-wide, facilitate effective communication during emergency situations, enhancing the overall emergency response system.
Standard response protocols are practiced through various safety and security drills. These include lockdown drills, secure/lockout drills, shelter-in-place drills for severe weather, hold for medical emergencies drills, and monthly fire/evacuation drills, as mandated by law. Lockdown drills are specifically conducted by the GISD police department. In the event of an emergency, campuses can be swiftly locked down using the Raptor App, front office staff pulling handles, or announcements over the intercom.
Collaboration with local law enforcement agencies is a cornerstone of GISD's security strategy. Partnerships with the City of Greenville Police Department, City of Greenville Fire Department, Hunt County Sheriff's Department, and Department of Public Safety ensure a coordinated and effective response in various situations.
The district employs the Blackboard internet-based communication system to provide timely updates and information to the school community. An anonymous tip line is also available on the GISD website, promoting a culture of reporting and vigilance.
To further enhance security, GISD collaborates with the Greenville Police Department for random searches, deploying K9 units to ensure a safe and secure environment for all.
In case of emergencies, a 24-hour emergency call line is available at 903-259-2664, providing a direct link to the district's security personnel.
“Greenville ISD's number one priority will continue to be the safety and security of our students and staff," shared GISD Police Chief Ramon Rodriguez. “Greenville ISD is dedicated to creating a safe and secure environment conducive to learning, and we appreciate the support of our community in achieving this goal.”
