Sherman Police officers responded to a 911 call from a child Thursday night and rescued a woman and two children from a man allegedly threatening them with a machete.
On April 3, 2025, at approximately 10:26 PM, Sherman Dispatch received an emergency call from a child reporting a disturbance in the 1200 block of South Maxey Street. The child stated their father was swinging a knife and attempting to harm their mother.
Upon arrival, officers received no response at the front door. Dispatch remained on the phone with the child, who informed them that the father, later identified as 44-year-old Jose Mauricio Canas, was holding everyone in a back bedroom. Officers moved around the house and overheard a verbal altercation inside. Through a window, they observed the disturbance in the bedroom.
Officers made an emergency entry into the residence. Inside the bedroom, they encountered Canas holding a machete. An adult female and two children were huddled together on a bed in the corner of the room, just feet away from Canas. Officers repeatedly ordered Canas to drop the weapon, but he refused. Canas then turned toward the officers, still holding the machete, and took several steps in their direction.
Officers deployed a taser, which successfully subdued Canas. Even after being brought to the ground, Canas continued to resist arrest before being handcuffed and escorted outside.
Canas sustained an injury during the encounter with officers and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. He was deemed fit for confinement and subsequently arrested on the following charges:
- 3 counts of Aggravated Assault Deadly Weapon
- 2 counts of Unlawful Restraint less than 17 years of age
- Unlawful Restraint
- Aggravated Assault Against Public Servant
- Resist Arrest Search or Transport
His bond was set at $230,000.
