Strong opposition persists against the proposed Marvin Nichols Reservoir, with the regional water planning group, Region D, including its opposition in the recently published regional water plan.
The proposed reservoir would flood approximately 66,000 acres in the Sulphur River Basin, affecting Titus, Red River, and Franklin counties. While Region C, based in Arlington, supports the reservoir's construction, Region D, based in Mount Pleasant, remains firmly opposed. The project requires permits from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Adding to the concerns of Northeast Texas residents, the Northeast Texas Municipal Water District Board of Directors held its monthly meeting in Hughes Springs on Monday, February 24, 2025. During the public comment period, 28 residents voiced their concerns about ongoing discussions regarding the potential sale of Lake O' the Pines water to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Several officials also registered to speak against the proposed water sale.
