The body of Larry Murl Smith, who was reported missing on February 13th, was recovered on February 22nd, 2025, at Texas Highway 37 at the Franklin/Red River County line on the Sulfur River.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Department, with assistance from multiple agencies including the Mt. Vernon Police Department, Cass County Sheriff's Department, Choctaw County Sheriff's Department, Franklin County Water District Police, Parks and Wildlife K9, DPS Aircraft Division, Texas Highway Patrol, and Texas Rangers, conducted an extensive search after Smith was reported missing.
"Multiple locations and large areas of interest were searched in the past week until his body was located today," stated Sheriff Ricky Jones.
Authorities have identified persons of interest who are currently in custody on unrelated charges. Multiple warrants for capital murder are expected to be issued soon.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details are being released at this time.
"I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Larry Smith," said Jones. "Know that we are committed to seeking justice and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable."
The Franklin County Sheriff's Department also expressed gratitude to all agencies involved in the search and recovery efforts.
