The City of Ferris has reached a new agreement with WM (formerly Waste Management) to expand free residential solid waste collection from 1,600 to 3,500 homes, preventing the introduction of citywide waste collection fees.
With the city’s growth, the number of homes receiving free trash service was nearing the previous cap of 1,600. Without this agreement, solid waste fees of approximately $17 to $21 per month would have been implemented citywide. The expansion ensures continued free trash service, saving households over $200 annually. Residents will continue to receive twice-weekly pickup with no service changes.
Ferris remains the only city in the ArkLaTex region to receive free residential trash service through WM. City officials emphasized that WM was not obligated to increase the number of covered homes, but the expansion was secured through negotiations and a strong working relationship.
“Our partnership with WM continues to provide outstanding value to the people of Ferris,” said City Manager Brooks Williams. “Not only does this agreement secure continued savings for thousands of our residents, but it also reinforces Ferris’s ability to deliver high-quality services without increasing financial burdens on families.”
Mayor Fred C. Pontley added, “This is a major win for Ferris. We were rapidly approaching the original limit of 1,600 homes, and without this expansion, residents would have faced new waste collection fees. Thanks to our strong relationship with WM and the City’s proactive leadership, we’ve secured a benefit that no other city in the ArkLaTex region enjoys.”
This agreement highlights Ferris’s commitment to financial responsibility and strategic partnerships, ensuring continued cost savings and service for its residents.
