Beginning Thursday, February 13, 2025, the Gregg County Sheriff's Office will switch to encrypted radio channels to enhance the safety of crime victims, witnesses, deputies, and other first responders.
Officials cited concerns over the public release of sensitive information, including victim and witness names and suspect details, as a reason for the change. The department has seen an increase in emergency communication details being shared on social media, including the GPS locations of calls for service.
By encrypting radio transmissions, the Sheriff's Office aims to protect the identities of those involved in emergency situations and improve overall safety for law enforcement and emergency personnel. The change is intended to create a more secure environment while maintaining efficient emergency response efforts.
