A student at Winnsboro High School was detained Friday morning, February 7, after staff discovered a loaded firearm in the student's backpack.
The Winnsboro ISD Police Department recovered the weapon and took the student into custody. The Winnsboro Police Department also responded and is assisting in the ongoing investigation. School officials confirmed that there was no active or ongoing threat to the campus.
In a letter to parents, Winnsboro ISD reassured the community that the situation was handled promptly.
"The situation was handled immediately once staff became aware, and all students are safe," the letter stated. "The student responsible was detained, and there is no ongoing threat to our campus. The safety of our students is always our top priority, and we appreciate the swift response of our staff and law enforcement."
