At approximately 4:00 a.m. on February 6, 2025, Bryan County deputies called in a pursuit to the Grayson County Sheriff's Office involving a white utility van traveling south on US-75 without headlights and swerving erratically. Denison Police took over at the Texas border before handing it off to Sherman officers, who suspected the driver was under the influence.
With assistance from Sherman Police Officer Day, deputies deployed spike strips, successfully deflating both left-side tires. However, the driver, identified as 24-year-old Jose Lazaro, continued fleeing before pulling into a parking lot. He then bailed out of the moving van, which crashed into a parked truck, and attempted to escape on foot.
Deputies pursued Lazaro through the parking lot, where he appeared to be trying to access an occupied vehicle before being subdued with a Taser.
Upon searching the van, authorities discovered approximately 60 brand-new packs of shingles, a generator, and various tools. Lazaro denied knowledge of the stolen items, claiming he was “just the driver.”
Lazaro was taken into custody and booked into the Grayson County Jail on the following charges:
- Evading Arrest/Detention with a Vehicle
- Evading Arrest/Detention with a Previous Conviction
- Attempted Theft of Property ($30K-$150K) – Enhanced
