Promethazine is a prescription antihistamine commonly used to treat allergies, nausea, and motion sickness. It is also used as a sedative and to enhance the effects of opioid pain relievers. When abused, especially in combination with codeine cough syrup, it can produce a euphoric or sedative effect and is commonly referred to on the illegal market as "Purple Drank" or "Lean."
