Lamar County Sheriff's Office Warns of Scam Targeting Residents

The Lamar County Sheriff's Office has issued a scam alert regarding individuals impersonating law enforcement officers to extort money from residents.

According to officials, the scammers are aggressive, articulate, and persuasive, often using the names of real officers from local departments. They may possess personal information, including names and addresses, and claim to know the victim’s location.

The scammers threaten arrest for allegedly failing to respond to a Federal Civil Court summons or subpoena, stating that the victim will be held in the Lamar County Jail for several days unless a fine is paid immediately. They demand payment through cryptocurrency or wire transfer.

Authorities emphasize that no legitimate law enforcement officer will ever request money over the phone. Residents are urged not to provide personal information or send money. If contacted by these scammers, individuals should hang up and report the incident to their local law enforcement agency.
