Gladewater Teen Arrested for Extensive Vandalism at Union Grove High School

The Upshur County Sheriff's Office announced an arrest following an investigation into a criminal mischief case at Union Grove High School located at 11377 Union Grove Rd in Gladewater.

According to surveillance footage, the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Friday night. The suspect, seen wearing a blue hoodie, caused extensive damage to the school buildings, with damages estimated between $150,000 and $300,000.

Based on tips from the public and investigative efforts, authorities identified the suspect as 17-year-old George O. Merrill III of Gladewater. Merrill was taken into custody and arraigned on Sunday, January 26, 2025, by Justice of the Peace Lyle Potter.

Merrill faces a charge of Criminal Mischief >=$150,000<$300,000, a second-degree felony. His bond was set at $300,000. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details.
