On October 31, 2022, Prosper Police Department (PPD) officers responded to a medical emergency at a childcare facility in the 1100 block of La Cima Blvd. Upon arrival, officers were informed that four children, ranging from 12 to 18 months old, had been transported to a local hospital with severe exposure to Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) after ingesting cannabis-infused edible candies, commonly known as “gummies.”
PPD detectives launched an investigation, identifying Anisah Burks, a 35-year-old employee at the facility, as the individual responsible for providing the edibles to the children.
On December 6, 2024, Burks pled guilty to all five counts related to the incident, including Injury to a Child and Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 2. Sentencing was held on December 20, 2024, where Burks received a one-year sentence for each Injury to a Child charge and three years of confinement in the Texas Department of Corrections for the controlled substance offense.
