Texarkana Man Arrested in Sulphur Springs After Drug Discovery During Parking Lot Disturbance

Marquis Lumont Bailey

On Christmas Eve, just before 8:00 PM, Sulphur Springs Police responded to a reported disturbance in the 600 block of Bill Bradford Road. Upon arrival, officers encountered two males and a female near a black Nissan Sentra in a parking lot.

One individual, identified as 21-year-old Marquis Lumont Bailey of Texarkana, Texas, was reportedly yelling at both the female passenger and officers. Officers noted Bailey hesitated in providing his date of birth and could not recall his middle name, raising suspicions. When Bailey refused verbal commands and attempted to leave, he was detained for officer safety.

Bailey stated he did not have a driver's license or identification, but the female passenger confirmed his identity. She expressed fear of Bailey and alleged he grabbed her jacket during the altercation but clarified he did not physically harm her.

A second male passenger alleged that Bailey had mushrooms in the vehicle. Officers detected a strong smell of marijuana coming from the car, and the registered owner granted permission for a search.

The search uncovered a small backpack containing Bailey's wallet, drug paraphernalia, and a glass jar with suspected mushrooms. Small burnt marijuana cigarettes were also found in the front center cup holder. The suspected mushrooms, weighing approximately two grams, were confiscated.

Bailey was arrested and transported to the Hopkins County Jail. He was booked on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 2 < 1 Gram (POSS CS PG 2 < 1G). The vehicle was released to its registered owner.
