On Saturday, November 9, 2024, Texas A&M Forest Service marked a significant environmental milestone by planting over 150 trees at Morris Frank Park Wetlands in Lufkin, Texas. The event, part of the ReForest Lufkin initiative, also saw 280 saplings distributed to community members.
This collaborative effort, which included local organizations and volunteers, was co-led by Texas A&M Forest Service Green Futures, a corporate sustainability partnership initiative. It highlights Lufkin’s 35th year of achieving Tree City USA recognition and its first Growth Award for urban forestry advancements.
The chosen location for the tree planting aims to restore the park’s wetland area, helping to mitigate stormwater runoff, improve the tree canopy’s resilience, and enhance biodiversity. The newly planted trees are expected to increase the percolation of water into the soil, improve wildlife habitat, and provide a serene greenspace for residents.
“This event marks a historic achievement for the city,” said Morgan Abbott, Texas A&M Forest Service Partnership Coordinator. “The leadership and dedication of the Lufkin community have ensured this multigenerational project will provide long-term economic, environmental, social, and spiritual benefits.”
In addition to the planting, local organizations such as Angelina Beautiful Clean, Caddo Sustainable Timberlands, and the City of Lufkin, among others, have supported the initiative. The collaboration between local volunteers, non-profits, and corporate partners exemplifies the community's commitment to enhancing its environment.
“Green Futures connects funders with local solutions to achieve meaningful environmental and social goals,” Abbott explained. “By planting these trees, Lufkin has shown its dedication to creating a healthier, more sustainable future for all its residents.”
Upcoming Green Futures Plantings are scheduled in the Houston area. A tree planting will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Jane Long Academy Spark Park (6501 Bellaire Blvd, Houston, Texas 77074).
