On November 7, 2024, the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents approved the name change of Texas A&M University-Commerce to East Texas A&M University. The new name takes effect immediately, though updates to marketing materials, signage, and other branding elements will take some time.
University President Dr. Mark Rudin emphasized the importance of the change, stating, “This is a necessary move to set us up for future success.” He noted the university's significant growth and its expanding reach to both urban and rural populations across Texas, as well as its growing national and international student demographics.
Bill Mahomes, chair of the Board of Regents, affirmed the decision, citing the university's impressive growth and success. “We must enhance our identity and outreach to continue building on this foundation,” he said. “Changing the university's name is a crucial step in our broader strategy to serve our state better.”
Chancellor John Sharp supported the rebranding, stating, “This is long overdue, and it returns to the original tradition of ‘ET’ as the university’s symbol while raising its prominence.” He added, “This university has always been bigger than one town in Texas.”
The name change reflects the institution's commitment to improving name recognition and strengthening its regional engagement. Dr. Rudin explained, “We believe that this name change will better reflect our heritage and mission while allowing us to connect more deeply with the communities we serve.”
Over the coming months, the university will implement changes to its branding, website, email addresses, and communication materials. Stakeholders will be kept informed throughout the transition process.
