Huffman Woman Sentenced to Federal Prison for Stealing Nearly $25,000 from Elderly Victim

A 71-year-old Huffman woman has been sentenced to federal prison and ordered to pay restitution for wire fraud, announced U.S. Attorney Damien M. Diggs.

Marcia Nickette Remedies pleaded guilty to wire fraud and was sentenced to eight months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Michael J. Truncale on November 5, 2024. In addition to her prison sentence, Remedies was ordered to pay $24,887.75 in restitution to the victim.

The case stemmed from an investigation initiated by the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office in May 2023, after a 91-year-old bed-ridden individual reported that Remedies, who was employed as her caretaker, had unlawfully withdrawn money from her account. The victim, who had hired Remedies through an ad on Facebook in October 2022, was authorized to use her debit card for one-time purchases such as personal care items and groceries.

However, between November 2022 and April 2023, Remedies made numerous unauthorized withdrawals from the victim’s account at various ATMs and locations, including Delta Downs Racetrack Casino and Hotel in Vinton, Louisiana. Surveillance footage captured Remedies conducting these unauthorized transactions.

In total, Remedies withdrew $24,887.75 from the victim's account. The investigation was carried out by the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI, with prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Reynaldo P. Morin.
