Mercer Bejort McCoo Jr., 29, of Mount Pleasant, has been cleared of a murder charge stemming from a house fire that resulted in the death of a 75-year-old man. McCoo was arrested on December 21, 2022, and faced murder charges related to the incident. However, on October 21, Judge Angela Saucier dismissed the murder charge.
The dismissal occurred shortly after McCoo was sentenced to 30 years in prison for an unrelated bribery charge on October 15. According to court documents, McCoo committed the bribery offense, classified as a first-degree felony, on January 22, 2022. He pleaded guilty and received 1,029 days of credit for time served as part of his sentence.
