The Mesquite Police Department is organizing a Gun Buy Back Event aimed at enhancing community safety by reducing the number of firearms that could potentially be used in violent crimes or accidental incidents. The event is set for Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 8 AM to 11 AM at the Mesquite Arena, located at 1818 Rodeo Drive, Mesquite, TX.
The Gun Buy Back program allows individuals to anonymously turn in unwanted firearms in exchange for gift cards, with no questions asked regarding ownership or the firearm's origin. This initiative is part of the department's ongoing effort to prevent gun violence and ensure the safe disposal of firearms.
Participants are instructed to remain in their vehicles during the drive-up event. Firearms should be unloaded and placed in the trunk for safety. The department has emphasized that no walk-ups will be allowed, and individuals should follow the directions of staff present at the event. Boxed ammunition will be accepted, but explosives will not.
Compensation for surrendered firearms will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of five firearms per person. The compensation structure is as follows:
- $100 per handgun
- $150 per long gun or privately manufactured firearm (commonly known as a ghost gun)
The number of gift cards is limited and subject to availability. Mesquite Police personnel retain the right to refuse any firearm that does not meet Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) standards. The event will proceed regardless of inclement weather.
