Bowie County Man Charged with Cruelty After 12 Missing Dogs Found Dead

Stuart Duncan Hammonds

The Bowie County Sheriff’s Office reported that on October 3rd, 2024, deputies received information regarding several missing dogs from homes in the Simms area. One dog owner indicated a possible suspect living nearby, prompting an investigation.

Investigators visited the residence of 24-year-old Stuart Duncan Hammonds and his girlfriend, where deputies were immediately struck by the smell of decaying animals. During their search, they discovered seven animal carcasses around the home and barn. Further examination revealed skeletal remains that were identified as belonging to 12 dogs, with some showing signs of head trauma consistent with gunshot wounds.

Additional investigation indicated that Hammonds killed four of the dogs during episodes of rage while arguing with his girlfriend. Authorities believe he had picked up the dogs while they were roaming loose in the Simms area and may have adopted some through social media posts.

A witness corroborated the allegations, confirming that Hammonds was responsible for the deaths of all 12 dogs. He has been arrested and charged with 12 counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals, with a bond set at $100,000.
