Hopkins County Sheriff Warns Residents of Ongoing Vehicle Burglaries

The Hopkins County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning urging residents to be vigilant about securing their vehicles amid a surge in vehicle burglaries. Sheriff Lewis Tatum emphasized the importance of locking vehicles and removing any weapons and valuables, as a group responsible for multiple burglaries in the county and surrounding areas is believed to be sending more crews to target local residents.

The sheriff reported that over 12 counties south of Hopkins have also fallen victim to these criminals, who previously struck the area and were last seen operating in Wood County, Rains County, and Nacogdoches County on the night of October 23 into the early hours of October 24. Some firearms stolen during these burglaries were recently discovered while the suspects attempted to smuggle them into Mexico, raising concerns about their armed and dangerous nature.

Residents are advised not to confront the suspects, who have previously exhibited deadly force. Sheriff Tatum noted that the situation highlights broader concerns about safety and security, urging the community to take proactive measures to protect themselves and their property.

In an ongoing effort to locate the suspects, an alert was issued on October 28, as deputies search the Dike and Sulphur Bluff areas for a dark-colored ¾ ton truck with cab lights and oversized wheels, believed to be connected to the burglaries. Residents are encouraged to report any sightings of the vehicle by calling 911.

The sheriff's office reassured the community that they will be increasing patrols to deter further criminal activity and encouraged anyone who sees suspicious behavior to contact law enforcement immediately.
