An investigator from the Northeast Texas Auto Theft Task Force discovered a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro displaying a counterfeit Temporary Tag on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was equipped with a cloned VIN from a 2021 Camaro and was reported stolen out of Fort Worth, Texas.
The individual in possession of the Camaro had purchased it through Facebook Marketplace, reportedly paying a significant amount for the vehicle. Unfortunately for the buyer, cases like this often result in financial loss, as victims of vehicle theft typically forfeit their payments when the vehicle is determined to be stolen.
Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution when purchasing vehicles and equipment from individuals through online platforms, as there has been a noticeable increase in stolen property being sold through these means.
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles offers several tips to help prospective buyers avoid purchasing stolen vehicles:
- Ensure that the title and registration match the name and address of the seller.
- Be wary of sellers who lack a fixed address, place of employment, or phone number.
- Request references regarding past financing and insurance for the vehicle, and verify this information with the relevant financial institutions.
- Confirm that the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the dashboard is present, secure, and unaltered.
- Inspect the VIN plate for signs of repainting, ensuring that the stamped numbers appear to be original factory numbers.
- If authenticity is in question, consult a dealership that handles the same model or contact law enforcement.
- Be suspicious of any deal that appears "too good to be true."
The investigation into the recovery of the stolen Camaro continues.
