Sulphur Springs Man Arrested on Drug and Firearm Charges After Attempt to Evade Deputies

Justin Lynn Petrea

On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, Deputy Shelton from the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office attempted to serve a warrant for Christopher Brian Goss at a residence on the 300 block of CR 2471. Upon arrival, Shelton observed a man, later identified as 35-year-old Justin Lynn Petrea of Sulphur Springs, fleeing from an enclosed trailer into the garage. As Shelton approached the home, Petrea reached into his pocket and dropped a folded $5 bill before entering the house.

Petrea was apprehended, and Deputy Shelton recovered the bill, which contained a crystal-like substance suspected to be methamphetamine. SGT Tanner Steward confirmed the presence of the substance. After hearing what sounded like a firearm being chambered, SGT Steward entered the residence, discovering a shotgun on a couch with a live round next to it.

Petrea was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1 >=1g<4g (F3). Additionally, a Bond Forfeiture Warrant was issued for Illegal Dumping over 1,000 lbs. His bond was set at $95,000. Petrea, who had served seven years in prison from 2014 to 2021, was taken to the Hopkins County Jail. His father had also been arrested earlier in July for Illegal Dumping.

Goss was also arrested.  During the process of securing Goss, he placed a folded one-dollar bill on the vehicle he was leaning against. The bill was found to contain a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine, weighing approximately 0.27 grams.

Deputies then proceeded to search the residence for any other occupants. During this search, a wood-stocked break-action shotgun was discovered in plain sight. The shotgun's barrel was measured at approximately fifteen inches, which is below the legal minimum of eighteen inches.

A records check revealed that Goss had a prior felony conviction dated June 15, 2021. While securing the shotgun in the front seat of the patrol vehicle, the individual, who was seated in the transport area, voluntarily stated that the shotgun lacked a firing pin.

Goss has been charged with Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance PG1 between 4 and 200 grams,  Unlawfull Possession of Firearm by Felon and Prohibited Weapon.  His bond has not been set yet.
