The ongoing discussion regarding a potential name change for Texas A&M University-Commerce has resurfaced. On October 7, 2024, university President Dr. Mark Rudin communicated with the university community, proposing that the institution be renamed East Texas A&M University.
In his message, Dr. Rudin expressed his intention to request that the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents consider adding this proposal to their agenda for the upcoming regular meeting scheduled for November 6-8 in College Station. If the proposal is included on the agenda, a vote is expected to take place on November 7.
Earlier this year, a proposal to rename the university Texas A&M University-Dallas emerged but was met with significant public backlash, leading to its withdrawal in August.
Dr. Rudin's letter highlighted the university's growth and the challenges posed by a declining traditional college-aged population in Texas. He emphasized the need for a strengthened identity to increase visibility and better serve the educational needs of the region. The proposed name change would not only enhance the university’s identity but also reconnect it with its historical roots, as “East Texas” was part of its name until 1996.
The proposal process includes several steps: a letter will be submitted to Chancellor Sharp requesting the name change be added to the agenda, alongside a request for financial support for the associated costs. If the name change is approved, it would take effect immediately, with a requested grace period of six to eight months for a smooth transition.
Dr. Rudin acknowledged that there would be questions regarding the proposed name change and committed to keeping the community updated throughout the process.
