Suspect Arrested After Armed Standoff with Mesquite Police Following Whataburger Incident

On October 7, 2024, at approximately 3:51 AM, Mesquite Police Officers were dispatched to the Whataburger located in the 2900 block of Galloway Avenue following reports of a subject with a knife threatening employees. The suspect reportedly left the scene before officers arrived.

Shortly after, the suspect called the Whataburger business phone and indicated he was near Poteet High School. Officers located the individual on foot in the 3300 block of Poteet Drive, where they observed he was armed with a long gun. Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and two officers; however, neither the officers nor the suspect were struck. The suspect fled the scene on foot after firing at the officers.

Investigators later traced the suspect to a residence in the 700 block of Southwynd Street. The Mesquite Police Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiators were deployed to the location. At around 8:00 AM, the suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.

One of the officers involved in the incident has been with the Mesquite Police Department for three years, while the other officer is currently in field training. The Mesquite Police Criminal Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs Unit are conducting investigations in accordance with standard protocol. Investigators from the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office also responded to the scene for a separate and independent investigation.
