A deputy from the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office escaped injury after a shooting incident during a traffic stop in the High Point Lake Estates area. The incident began when the deputy attempted to stop a vehicle with an obscured paper tag, which failed to yield and led the deputy into a nearby neighborhood.
A passenger in the fleeing vehicle discharged several rounds, striking the deputy's vehicle bumper. The suspects continued northbound on FM 548, where the passenger exited the vehicle near State Highway 276, and the driver fled, ultimately crashing at FM 548 and I-30.
Officers found the driver unresponsive in the vehicle after he ignored commands to exit. He received medical attention at the scene before being transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The passenger, located by paramedics after jumping from the vehicle, was also taken to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities discovered cash and a firearm inside the vehicle. The identities of both individuals are under investigation, and the case remains active.
