An 11-year-old child was seriously injured Thursday morning after being struck by a car while boarding a Chisum ISD bus on Highway 82, east of FM 38. The bus had its red lights flashing and stop sign extended when a passenger car failed to stop and hit the child shortly before 7 a.m.
The driver, 28-year-old Alexis Velazquez of Edinburg, was arrested by a State Trooper for Failure to Stop for a School Bus, causing serious bodily injury. He was also charged with driving without a valid license and no insurance, both resulting in serious bodily injury.
Velazquez remains in the Lamar County Jail as the Texas Department of Public Safety continues its investigation. His bond has been set at $100,000.
The child was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
