On Monday, September 23, 2024, at approximately 4:16 PM, New Boston Police Officers responded to reports of a shooting at Front Street Apartments, located at 200 SE Front Street in New Boston, Texas. Upon arrival, officers encountered the shooting suspect, identified as 21-year-old Javier Vega of New Boston. Vega informed the officers that he had shot his friend.
Responding officers detained Vega without incident and located the victim, 23-year-old Sterling Levy of New Boston, deceased in the doorway of a second-story apartment. Witnesses at the scene reported that Vega and Levy were friends residing together with Levy's father.
According to witness accounts, the situation escalated after an argument between the two men. During the argument, Levy struck Vega in the jaw. Levy then stepped outside to speak with his fiancée, at which point Vega retrieved a gun. He approached the front door, opened it, and aimed the firearm at Levy. In an attempt to disarm Vega, Levy reached for the gun, causing it to discharge and strike him in the chest.
Levy was pronounced dead at the scene. Vega has been charged with murder and is currently being held at the Bowie County Jail.
