Forest Service Offers $800K in Grants for Prescribed Burns in East Texas

Texas A&M Forest Service is offering over $800,000 in grants to assist East Texas landowners with the cost of prescribed fire for wildfire risk reduction and ecosystem restoration.

Landowners can apply for the grant, which reimburses up to $30 per acre for prescribed burns conducted by certified and insured burn managers. The application deadline is September 30.

Available grants in this cycle include the Neches River and Cypress Basin Watershed Restoration Program (NRCBW), Community Protection Program (CPP), and State Fire Capacity near Federal lands in East Texas Prescribed Fire Grant (SFC-ETX).

Prescribed fire is a land management tool that benefits habitat restoration, soil health, and wildfire hazard reduction. Grant funding will prioritize wildfire hazard mitigation near homes, communities, and ecosystems.

“Prescribed fire is the most cost-effective method to manage the understory vegetation and dead fuel that accumulates in our forests over time,” said Andy McCrady, Texas A&M Forest Service Program Coordinator.

In 2023, Texas A&M Forest Service awarded over $293,000 to landowners, covering 10,969 acres of privately owned land. To be eligible for these grants, landowners must use a contractor licensed by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
