Cass County District Attorney Courtney Shelton has reported on two separate incidents involving threats to local schools.
The first incident occurred on Thursday, September 12, when rumors of a possible threat circulated on social media, primarily on Snapchat. In response, law enforcement agencies, including the Atlanta Police Department and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, conducted home visits and interviews to assess the validity of the threat. Shelton confirmed that no immediate danger was found. However, as a precaution, law enforcement increased their presence around schools.
“Investigators have identified and interviewed individuals who were aware of the concerning statements and persons of interest. This initial incident remains under investigation, and appropriate actions will be taken as it develops,” Shelton stated.
The second threat emerged the following day, on Friday, September 13, again through Snapchat. The Texas Department of Public Safety, in coordination with the Sheriff’s Office, Cass County District Attorney’s Office, and local school officials, investigated the matter. The source of the threat was traced to a juvenile in Cass County.
After questioning by law enforcement, the juvenile admitted that the threat was a prank. The individual has been charged with making a terroristic threat against a school. The case is being handled by the Cass County Juvenile Probation Department in cooperation with the District Attorney’s Office. Due to the individual’s age, their identity will remain confidential.
