Hopkins County Authorities Address Social Media Threat Hoax; Sulphur Springs Schools Increase Security Measures

The Sulphur Springs ISD Police Department, in collaboration with the Sulphur Springs Police Department and the Hopkins County Sheriff's Department, is addressing community concerns regarding social media posts about potential threats of school violence. These posts, circulating in Northeast Texas and neighboring states, have affected school district operations and heightened anxiety.

Authorities emphasize that making threats, whether real or hoaxes, is a serious crime, particularly when the safety of schoolchildren is involved. Law enforcement is prepared to take swift action, including arrests, against anyone responsible for such posts. At present, there is no credible evidence that the recent social media posts pose an actual threat, and authorities believe the posts are part of a hoax aimed at causing alarm.

Sulphur Springs ISD Police Chief Pat Leber, Sulphur Springs Police Chief Jason Ricketson, and Hopkins County Sheriff Lewis Tatum are working together, increasing law enforcement presence on school campuses and continuing to monitor the situation. Community members are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any relevant information to local authorities.

Middle School Precautionary Measures

In a letter to parents and guardians, Sulphur Springs Middle School Principal Josh Ross announced precautionary changes to a scheduled pep rally. Ross informed parents that, due to current concerns, extra security measures would be in place. Parents were asked to arrive early, bring identification, and expect longer check-in times. He emphasized that the school's priority is the safety of students.

During the event, parents will be seated in a holding area before being directed to the gym. After the rally, participating students can take photos with their parents, but early dismissals will not be allowed. Ross explained that students would need to return to class to collect their belongings and assist with event clean-up. Parents picking up students can wait in front of the school after dismissal.

Despite the enhanced security measures, Ross expressed confidence that the pep rally would still be a successful celebration of students.
