The Hawkins Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees accepted Superintendent Susan Morton's retirement letter following her recent arrest by the La Marque Police for intoxicated driving. Morton was taken into custody after a minor traffic accident that caused less than $200 in damage. The Board has appointed Marc Levesque as interim Superintendent.
The incident occurred on the 2400 block of Gulf Freeway at approximately 7:49 p.m. La Marque Police Department reported that the crash involved three vehicles: a 2005 Ford Explorer, a 2018 Kia Forte, and Morton’s 2023 Ford F-150.
According to a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) crash report, Morton’s F-150 failed to control its speed while approaching a traffic signal at the Gulf Freeway service road and Lake Road. The F-150 struck the rear of the Kia Forte, which then collided with the back of the Ford Explorer stopped at the signal. Morton fled the scene but was later located and arrested on Duroux Road.
Morton was booked into the Galveston County Jail on charges of driving while intoxicated and collision involving damage to a vehicle under $200.
