Hopkins County Traffic Stop Leads to Methamphetamine Arrest and Drug Seizure

Steven Lee Ostrander

A traffic stop was initiated in Hopkins County on a Ford truck due to a moving violation. Upon arrival, the Sulphur Springs Police officer conducted a records check on the driver, which revealed and confirmed outstanding warrants. During the stop, the driver displayed signs of nervousness, focusing predominantly on the front windshield or the passenger.

The passenger, who was distracted by his phone while searching for the vehicle's insurance documentation, exhibited trembling hands and brief eye contact when spoken to by the officer. The deputy observed inconsistencies in the accounts provided by the driver and the passenger, both of whom denied any previous drug-related charges, despite findings suggesting otherwise.

The officer requested consent from the passenger, who owns the vehicle, to conduct a search. The passenger refused, leading the officer to call for a K-9 unit. Officer Williams reported that the canine provided a positive alert during the search.

The search uncovered a glass pipe, typically used for smoking methamphetamines, along with a substantial amount of an orange liquid. An Altoid mint can was also discovered, containing a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine stored in a plastic bag. After advising both individuals of their rights through the Miranda Warning, Steven admitted that the narcotics and paraphernalia were his.

Steven, already secured in double-locked handcuffs due to the outstanding warrant, was transported to Hopkins County Jail. Officer Williams conducted a field test on the suspected methamphetamine, confirming its identity. The total weight of the methamphetamine, including packaging, was approximately 2.7 grams. The liquid from the glass pipe, which was tested and confirmed to be methamphetamine, weighed approximately 69.4 grams before being transferred into an empty container.

Steven Lee Ostrander faces charges for probation violation and possession of controlled substances with a bail set at $15,000.
