On Saturday, Kilgore Police dispatch was alerted to a police pursuit approaching Kilgore. The chase, originating in Smith County, involved a stolen truck from Dallas. Multiple agencies were involved, and Kilgore Police were asked if they had spike strips. During a shift change, officers set up in several locations to prevent the high-speed chase from entering town. The truck was spiked twice on Highway 259 South at Baughman Road by Officers Torres and Boles. Despite the spikes, the truck continued into town with minimal slowdown. Out-of-town squad cars had to stop and remove spike strips from the roadway.
Vance Callahan, also known as "The Goat," positioned himself at Dudley as the suspect passed by. As other pursuers fell behind, Callahan joined the chase. The truck, now on flat tires and smoking, turned onto Houston and crashed in the Meadowbrook Preschool parking lot. The suspect fled on foot, but Callahan pursued him. After a brief chase, Callahan apprehended the suspect once he was exhausted. Other officers later arrived, but Callahan had already secured the suspect.
