A Kaufman County Sheriff's deputy and a Crandall Police officer responded to a panic alarm early Saturday morning at an Exxon gas station located on the 5000 block of Farm Road 741 in Heartland. The officers arrived at the scene at approximately 3:09 a.m.
Upon arrival, the officers encountered a male suspect in the parking lot. The suspect displayed a firearm toward the officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire, according to a statement from the Crandall Police Department.
Both the Kaufman County deputy and the Crandall officer were shot in the leg during the altercation, and the suspect was also shot, as reported by the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department.
Despite attempts to administer life-saving measures, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The two officers were transported to Baylor Hospital in Dallas, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Texas Rangers are leading the ongoing investigation into the incident.
