Trespasser Shot by Property Owner Near Carthage

On Thursday, August 8, 2024, at 5:38 PM, Panola County Sheriff's Office Dispatch received 911 calls reporting that a trespasser had been shot by a property owner on Private Road 7011 near Carthage. Deputies and Constables, along with UT Health EMS, responded to the scene.

A male patient was found with a close-range gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was transported to UT Health Carthage ER and subsequently airlifted to Louisiana State University - Shreveport Hospital for further treatment. Two residents at the location were detained. The Panola County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division and the Criminal District Attorney's Office were notified. Deputies secured the scene while obtaining a search warrant from the 123rd Judicial District Court Judge.

The detained residents were interviewed at the Panola County Sheriff's Office. The incident stemmed from a dispute between neighbors that escalated into a physical altercation. Shaun Christopher Eaves, 43, of Carthage, was taken into custody for Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon, a 2nd degree felony, and booked into the Detention Center.

The injured victim is undergoing surgery and is expected to recover.
