On August 5, 2024, the Hunt County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) officially launched its Mental Health Unit (MHU). The new unit will be staffed by deputies Johnny Whitehead and Jacob Wells, both of whom have been with HCSO for two years and are transitioning from the patrol division.
Whitehead and Wells are specially trained and certified to assist individuals in mental health crises.
Sheriff Terry Jones stated, “The goal of this unit is to keep the people who are experiencing a mental health crisis out of jail if possible.”
