SWEPCO has reported an increase in cases where customers are approached by individuals claiming to be SWEPCO partners offering solar panels for residential use. SWEPCO's Vice President of External Affairs, William Bradford, Jr., clarified that the utility company neither sells solar panels nor partners with any companies that do.
Jeff Thigpen, Manager of Alternative Energy Resources, emphasized the importance of understanding the financial implications of solar panel installation. “There are many factors that determine if that will make financial sense for a customer,” Thigpen noted. SWEPCO advises customers to be cautious and informed about potential hidden costs before committing to solar panel installations.
While solar panels can generate some electrical energy, savings on electricity bills depend on the system’s cost and other factors. Payments for solar panels are in addition to SWEPCO bills, which will continue as the company maintains meters at customer properties.
Paul Pratt, SWEPCO Director of Customer Services & Marketing, urged consumers to research thoroughly before investing in solar panels, including understanding the product, costs, and the company providing the system.
Key points to remember:
- SWEPCO does not have partnerships with solar installation companies.
- SWEPCO does not conduct door-to-door sales for any products.
- Solar panels will not eliminate electricity bills entirely and will not provide power during a grid outage or at night.
