Paris Police Arrest Convicted Felon with Tampered Handgun Linked to Shooting Incident

On Saturday, July 20th, Paris Police officers approached Jairus Naqwell Garnes, 20, in the 1000 block of NE 8th St. due to outstanding arrest warrants. Garnes admitted to possessing a handgun in his backpack. The officers recovered the weapon, which had a tampered serial number. Further investigation revealed that Garnes is a convicted felon. He faces charges including Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (3 counts), Felon in Possession of a Firearm (warrant), and additional charges of Felon in Possession of a Firearm (on view) and Tampering with Identifying Numbers (on view). Garnes was booked and transported to Lamar County Jail. The arrest is related to a shooting incident on July 9 at Booker T Washington Apartments.
