On July 9, 2024, at approximately 11:38 P.M., the Mesquite Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the 3400 block of N. Town East Blvd. Upon arrival, officers found an 18-year-old male, later identified as Kavontae Slate of Mesquite, Texas, with a gunshot wound to his chest. An acquaintance of the victim was performing CPR when the officers arrived. Officers assisted in CPR and provided other life-sustaining treatment until Mesquite Fire arrived on the scene. Slate was transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation identified Omarey Marshall of Rowlett, Texas, as a suspect. On the morning of July 10, the Mesquite Police Department Tactical Team, along with Major Crime investigators, executed a search warrant at Marshall’s home and took him into custody.
Further investigation led to the identification of a second suspect. On July 16, 2024, detectives arrested Christion James, a 22-year-old male from Rowlett, for the offense of murder. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
