On July 13th, at approximately 1:23 a.m., Johnathan Bryant Edwards was driving a Yukon when he was stopped by an officer in the 800 block of Camp Street in Sulphur Springs. Edwards, the driver and arrestee, provided his Texas Driver's License (TX DL) number for identification. Both Edwards and his girlfriend, the passenger, appeared nervous and overly talkative.
When questioned outside the vehicle, Edwards stated that the Yukon belonged to his girlfriend's grandfather and that she had all her belongings in it. The girlfriend consented to a search of the vehicle. During the search, officers discovered a wallet containing a photocopy of Edwards' TX driver's license in a backpack behind the driver's seat. The backpack also contained drug paraphernalia, including a glass pipe commonly used for smoking methamphetamine, empty syringes, and small baggies used for narcotics.
Additionally, officers found three syringes containing a clear, bloody substance and a small baggy with a white crystal-like substance, suspected to be methamphetamine. Based on the paraphernalia and substances found, officers believed the syringes contained liquid methamphetamine.
Edwards was handcuffed, checked, and transported to Hopkins County Jail without incident. The arresting officer suspected that Edwards knowingly possessed the methamphetamine. The total weight of the syringes and the bag with the white crystal-like substance was approximately 9.4 grams. Edwards was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 1/1B => 4G < 200G (F2).
