Kelly Wayne Hewitt

On June 21, 2024, at 3:31 p.m., deputies and investigators received information about a fugitive located south of Terrell, Texas. Acting on this information, deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop. However, the suspect, 44-year-old Kelly Wayne Hewitt, evaded the deputies, leading them on a pursuit that ended at a municipal airport in Terrell, Texas.

During the pursuit, Hewitt crashed his vehicle and fled on foot, firing shots at the pursuing deputies and their K-9 unit. Despite the dangerous circumstances, the deputies were able to disarm the suspect without returning fire. Hewitt was apprehended and taken into custody. Remarkably, there were no injuries reported among the deputies or the K-9 unit.

The suspect now faces multiple charges, including Evading Arrest with a Previous Conviction, Evading Arrest and Detention with a Vehicle, Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant, Manufacturing and Delivery of a Controlled Substance (688 grams of Methamphetamine), Interference with a Police Service Animal, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, and a Federal Probation Violation. An adult female passenger, Karissa McQuay, was also arrested for Evading Arrest or Detention.

The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Terrell Police Department, Mesquite Police Department, and ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms) for their assistance in capturing the fugitive. Sheriff Bryan Beavers stated, “This incident shows the ongoing risks faced by law enforcement and the importance of their training and teamwork in ensuring community safety.”
