On Sunday, June 9, 2024, Lufkin Police Officers where called to a disturbance at the 700 block of Clark Avenue in Lufkin. As officers approached the home, someone started firing at the officers.
The individual was identified as 47-year-old Jason Penick of Lufkin. After shooting at officers, Penick barricaded himself inside the home. The standoff continued for hours.
During that time, additional occupants of the home were evacuated safely.
Police said that additional shots fired during the standoff were actually gas canisters that were launched into the home. In the early hours of Monday, Penick was finally taken into custody.
The Angelina County Sheriff's Office, Henderson County Sheriff's Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the State Police SWAT Team assisted in resolving the standoff. Penick is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant.
