Hunt Regional Healthcare has received approval from the Accreditation Counsel for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to launch its internal medicine residency program on July 1, 2024. The program will start with eight residents and aims to expand to twenty-four in the coming years. The initiative attracted over 1,000 applicants for the initial eight positions.
Under the leadership of Dr. Asim Usman, MD, who is board certified in internal medicine and palliative medicine, the residency program aims to provide high-quality education in internal medicine. The program's mission includes teaching, clinical service, comprehensive patient care, and research, with the goal of producing competent academic and clinical leaders committed to lifelong learning.
Hunt Regional Healthcare CEO Lee Boles expressed confidence in the program's impact on the community, stating, "These students will be a great asset to our district now and in the future." The program participants will gain valuable experience navigating the complexities of healthcare in the region.
Internal medicine physicians, also known as Internists or Doctors of Internal Medicine, specialize in adult medicine and are skilled in managing diagnostic problems and complex chronic conditions. They are often sought after by other medical professionals for their expertise in problem-solving, earning them the nickname "doctor's doctor."
This marks the second medical residency program offered by Hunt Regional Healthcare.
