On Tuesday, April 15th, Hopkins County deputies conducted a traffic stop on State Highway 19 North near the Delta County line following reports of a potential rolling disturbance. Officers observed a black Toyota traveling south and initiated a stop for investigation.
The driver, identified as 43-year-old Carolyn Denise Brumley, appeared agitated and was reportedly making erratic movements towards her passenger. Upon approaching the vehicle, deputies noted that Brumley was slurring her speech and appeared emotionally distressed due to personal issues.
Deputies instructed Brumley to keep her hands away from her bag and obtained verbal consent to search the vehicle. During the search, officers discovered a clear plastic bag containing a white powdery substance. Brumley claimed the substance was a crushed muscle relaxer that had been given to her and that she had thrown it away, but was unsure how it reappeared in her bag.
A field test confirmed the substance to be cocaine, weighing 0.882 grams. Brumley was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Hopkins County Jail. She was booked on a charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 Less Than 1 Gram, with her bond set at $15,000.
