Denton Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Role in Fatal Fentanyl Overdose

Courtney Green

Courtney Green, 28, of Denton, Texas, has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his involvement in the distribution of fentanyl that led to a fatal overdose. Green pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl, and was sentenced on January 30, 2025, by U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant.

The case stems from an overdose death on April 15, 2023, in Celina, Texas, where law enforcement responded to a report of a fatal overdose on Heatherton Drive. An autopsy confirmed the victim died from pulmonary congestion and edema due to the toxic effects of fentanyl. Investigators uncovered emails and text messages between Green and the victim that discussed the distribution of prescription pills. Further investigation revealed that Tiffane Chantial Volz, 37, of Denton, was Green's source of fentanyl supply. Volz, who also pleaded guilty to the same charge, is scheduled to be sentenced on February 18, 2025.

The case highlights the growing concerns over fentanyl distribution, with the DEA issuing a Public Safety Alert warning of the increasing availability and dangers of counterfeit prescription pills containing fentanyl and methamphetamine. The DEA's One Pill Can Kill campaign aims to raise awareness about the risks associated with these fake pills, which are mass-produced by criminal drug networks.

The investigation was carried out by the Celina Police Department, Denton County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew T. Johnson prosecuted the case.
