On Tuesday evening, December 24, 2024, just after 7:00 p.m., Sulphur Springs police officers responded to a 911 hang-up call in the 600 block of Main Street. While en route, dispatch updated the call to a physical disturbance.
Upon arrival, officers heard yelling and sounds of a struggle inside an apartment. After announcing their presence and receiving no response, officers forced entry into the residence. Inside, they found 37-year-old Veronica Marie Zamora on top of the victim, who had a brown belt wrapped around her neck. Zamora was immediately detained.
Officers observed blood spots on Zamora’s arms and chest, along with scratches and redness consistent with a physical altercation. Zamora claimed the victim, who she alleged was intoxicated and disrespectful toward her children, already had the belt around her neck in an earlier attempt to harm herself and denied placing it there.
The victim, who suffered visible injuries, including cuts to her head and a significant forehead laceration, provided a different account. She alleged that Zamora dragged her by her hair during an argument, choked her with her hands, and instructed one of her children to retrieve a belt. Zamora then reportedly used the belt to choke the victim, causing difficulty breathing and near loss of consciousness.
The victim stated the belt remained around her neck until officers entered the apartment. Investigators learned that Zamora and the victim had been in a relationship for about a year.
Veronica Zamora was arrested and transported to the Hopkins County Jail, where she was charged with Assault of a Family or Household Member by Impeding Breath or Circulation, a felony offense. Her bond was set at $50,000.
The investigation is ongoing..
