On Tuesday morning, December 24, 2024, an SUV carrying six individuals from Oklahoma hydroplaned off Highway 75 near Taylor Street in Sherman amidst heavy rainfall. The vehicle became trapped in a flooded drainage ditch, traveling down the creek toward Houston Street.
Sherman Police and Sherman Fire-Rescue responded to the scene, where four occupants were rescued from the vehicle. One individual was found deceased in the floodwaters, and an 8-year-old girl remains missing after being swept away by the current. The identities of those involved have not been released.
The southbound service road of Highway 75 remains closed at Center Street as crews, including Texas Task Force 2, continue search operations. Rescue teams worked throughout the night and into Christmas Day, expanding the search area beyond Sherman into the lower branches of Post Oak and Choctaw creeks.
By Wednesday afternoon, searchers had covered approximately seven miles of creek, but the missing child had not yet been located.
In a statement, the Sherman Police Department thanked the community for their overwhelming support while requesting privacy for the family during this difficult time.
"We have dozens of first responders involved in this search, many with extensive training in hazardous conditions. We respectfully ask that no additional volunteers join at this time to ensure our focus remains on finding this 8-year-old girl," the department stated.
Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact the Sherman Police Department’s non-emergency number at 903-892-7290.
Efforts to locate the missing child remain ongoing.
