Greenville High School NJROTC Celebrates a Year of Community Service and Competitive Success

2024 has been a year of growth and accomplishment for the Greenville High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC). The cadets started the year by committing to serve their community, placing and retrieving over 100 American flags throughout Greenville on major holidays. This effort required extensive planning, including identifying markers, ensuring proper placement, and coordinating volunteer time from the cadets.

Their service continued with various community involvement initiatives, such as partnering with Keep Greenville Beautiful for beautification projects, volunteering at district events like the Back-to-School Resource Fair, Convocation, and the Veterans Day program, and assisting with camp cleanup at competition sites.

The NJROTC cadets excelled in competitive events, achieving impressive results:

  • Marksmanship Team: Set consecutive team and personal records, placing 4th at the Area 19 Championship with a team record score of 1849 and 3rd at Joshua High School with a new team score of 1877. Eight cadets set personal bests during these competitions.
  • Drill and Athletic Teams: Secured 3rd place in athletics at the Joshua Drill Meet and won the "Battle of 380" against Princeton High School NJROTC.
  • Navy Orienteering Nationals: Competed for the first time with two cadets placing in the top 40 nationally. The team has already earned five 1st place finishes, two 2nd place finishes, two 3rd place finishes, and one 4th place finish in the new season.
  • Drone Competition: At their first competition in Claremore, OK, cadet Haston Jones earned 1st place in the minesweeper event and 3rd in the relay race, while the team placed 2nd in the minesweeper event.

The year concluded with another successful drill meet at Joshua ISD, where the cadets earned:

  • 5th Place in Area 19 overall
  • 1st Place in the 100-yard Relay Race
  • 3rd Place in Drill Team
  • 4th Place in Color Guard
  • 5th Place in Personnel Inspection

The NJROTC cadets celebrated their accomplishments at the Annual Navy Ball and awards ceremony, where many cadets received distinguished awards. The year ended on a high note, and the cadets are eager to begin 2025 with the Annual Military Inspection (AMI) on January 15, followed by the first orienteering event of the season on January 18.

Senior Naval Science Instructor AZ1 Mike Flater and the cadets wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, thanking the community for their ongoing support of the NJROTC program.
