Texans Urged to Prevent Wildfires During Labor Day Weekend and Dove Hunting Season

As Labor Day weekend and dove hunting season approach, Texans are reminded to be vigilant in protecting lands and natural resources from wildfires. August’s hot and dry conditions led to 281 wildfires across North and Northwest Texas, burning 24,333 acres. Although forecasted rain is expected to reduce wildfire risk, caution is still advised for all outdoor activities.

“Forecast rain will help to decrease wildfire potential across most of the state,” said Jared Karns, Texas A&M Forest Service Interim Fire Chief. “We encourage everyone to be careful with outdoor activities this holiday and throughout the fall.”

During the hunting season, which runs from September to January, wildfires are commonly caused by vehicles, trailers, ATVs/UTVs, and other equipment. With 90% of Texas wildfires being human-caused, personal responsibility is crucial.

To prevent wildfires while dove hunting:

  • Avoid driving over or parking on dry grass.
  • Check with local officials for burn bans or outdoor burning restrictions at burn ban map.
  • Ensure trailer tires are properly inflated, chains do not contact the road, and loose metal does not create sparks.
  • Carry a shovel, water, and a fire extinguisher in camp.

For grilling safety:

  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Clean your grill of excess grease to prevent flare-ups.
  • Place the grill in an open space away from flammable materials and not under a tree or on a wooden deck.
  • Allow coals to cool completely before disposing of them.
