Texas A&M University-Commerce has announced that its Children’s Learning Center, located at 2601 Culver Street in Commerce, will be closing at the end of July. The decision was communicated to university faculty and staff in an email from A&M-Commerce Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students Judy Sackfield. The announcement, made yesterday afternoon, did not specify the reasons behind the closure but emphasized that it was not made lightly, recognizing the significant impact on the community.
In a letter to parents, Anne Vieira, director of the Children’s Learning Center, expressed deep appreciation for the trust and support received over the years. Despite efforts to overcome challenges, Vieira explained that sustaining operations had become untenable. The center, accredited since 1989 and capable of accommodating 158 children, has been a cornerstone of childcare and early education in the area.
To assist families during this transition, the center will provide referral services to help parents find alternative childcare and educational programs. Additionally, they will ensure that all necessary documents, including final progress reports, are prepared and provided to families before the closing date.
The Children’s Learning Center, established in its current building in 1985 on university property purchased by East Texas State College in 1958, has maintained its commitment to high-quality education and care. State records indicate that during the last inspection on February 7, 2024, no deficiencies were found, affirming its adherence to accreditation standards.
